From the Secret Garden to the Kitchen: Apple Harvest at Boyne Hill House

There are little signs across Boyne Hill House that autumn is beginning to settle in.

The light softens across the parklands, the gardens slowly begin to change, and in the Secret Garden, the apple trees are heavy with fruit.

A Little Autumn Harvest

Apple season is one of those simple moments on the estate that we look forward to each year.

Tucked within our Secret Garden, the trees are now abundant with apples, each variety ripening in its own time. And if there is one person who knows exactly what is growing where, it is Sean, our Head Gardner.

He knows the garden by heart. The different varieties, the trees they grow on and, importantly, just when each apple is ready to be picked.

A wander through the garden with him at this time of year becomes a little lesson in the seasons of the estate.

From Garden to Kitchen

The story does not quite end once the apples leave the tree.

Baskets from the garden make their way to our kitchen, where our chefs find ways to bring the harvest into the season ahead, including freshly made apple chutneys and jams.

It is a small detail, but one we rather love. Something grown only a short walk from the kitchen becoming part of the food prepared here at Boyne Hill House.

A Wedding Venue That Changes With the Seasons

One of the loveliest things about a country house wedding in Ireland is watching the setting move naturally through the year.

The Secret Garden that fills with blossom and greenery through spring and summer begins to take on warmer tones as autumn arrives. Apples ripen, leaves turn and the landscape surrounding the house slowly changes with it.

For our autumn weddings, that season becomes part of the atmosphere rather than simply the backdrop.

And sometimes, it is the smallest things that tell the story best.
