7 Things Nobody Tells You About Viewing Wedding Venues

Viewing wedding venues is one of those moments when everything suddenly starts to feel real.

You’ve probably spent weeks scrolling through photographs, checking dates, talking about guest numbers and saving inspiration. Then you finally walk through the doors of a venue and think, could we actually get married here?

But choosing your wedding venue isn’t just about finding somewhere that looks beautiful.

At Boyne Hill House, we’ve welcomed plenty of couples through our doors for that all-important first viewing, so here are seven things we think every couple should know before they start venue hunting.

1. How You Feel Matters More Than You Think

Of course, you’ll have a checklist.

Capacity. Location. Ceremony options. Food. Accommodation. Price.

They all matter.

But there’s something else that’s much harder to put on a spreadsheet: how you feel when you arrive.

Can you picture your family and friends here? Can you imagine getting ready that morning? Walking into your ceremony? Sitting down for dinner? Sneaking away for photographs while everyone enjoys the drinks reception?

Sometimes couples walk into a venue and simply know.

Don’t ignore that feeling.

2. You're Not Just Viewing a Room

One of the biggest mistakes couples can make is focusing entirely on where dinner will take place.

Your wedding is a whole day, not just a meal.

When viewing a venue, imagine the journey your guests will take from the moment they arrive.

Where will they gather before the ceremony? Where will your ceremony take place? What happens during the drinks reception? Where can you go for photographs? How does the day flow into dinner and then into the evening celebrations?

At Boyne Hill House, we always encourage couples to imagine the venue with their own people in it.

That’s when spaces really start to come alive.

3. Ask What Happens If It Rains

We’re in Ireland. We have to talk about it!

Outdoor ceremonies and garden drinks receptions can be absolutely gorgeous, but you should love your venue’s rainy-day option too.

Ask where your ceremony would move if the weather changed. Find out where guests would have drinks and photographs. Look at the indoor spaces with the same attention you give the gardens.

Your Plan B shouldn’t feel like second best.

A great wedding venue should still give you a beautiful day regardless of what the Irish weather decides to do.

4. Pay Attention to How You're Treated

This one is incredibly important — and surprisingly easy to overlook when you're distracted by beautiful rooms and gardens.

The people showing you around may become part of one of the biggest days of your life.

Do you feel comfortable asking questions?

Are they interested in what you want?

Do they explain things clearly?

Do you feel rushed, or do you feel looked after?

You aren't simply booking a building. You're choosing the team you'll trust to help bring your wedding day together.

That relationship matters.

5. Don't Be Afraid to Ask What's Actually Included

Two wedding packages can look similarly priced on paper and include very different things.

Before comparing venues purely on price, understand exactly what you're getting.

Ask about everything from food and drinks to furniture, table settings, ceremony spaces, accommodation and any extras that could appear later.

And if there’s something you don’t understand, ask.

There are no silly questions when you’re making one of the biggest decisions of your wedding planning.

The clearer everything is from the beginning, the easier it is to compare venues properly.

6. Your Guest List Changes Everything

Before falling completely in love with a venue, have a realistic idea of your guest numbers.

Not the “we might invite everyone we've ever met” number.

The number of people you genuinely think will be there.

A venue can feel completely different depending on whether you're planning a wedding for 60, 100 or 150 guests.

Ask how the spaces work for your expected numbers. You want your wedding to feel full of atmosphere without feeling cramped — or like your guests are lost in a room designed for a much larger celebration.

It's also worth thinking beyond capacity.

Where will guests stay? How will they get home? Will elderly relatives be comfortable? Is everything easy for guests to navigate?

Seeing the venue through your guests' eyes can tell you a lot.

7. Take a Moment Before You Leave

This might be our favourite piece of advice.

When the viewing is finished, don't immediately jump into the car and rush off to the next appointment.

Take five minutes.

Walk back through the grounds. Look at the house again. Stand somewhere quiet together and imagine the day.

Then ask each other one simple question:

Can we see ourselves getting married here?

Not whether the venue ticks 47 boxes on a spreadsheet.

Not whether you've seen something similar on Instagram.

Can you actually picture your wedding here?

Because when you've found the right venue, very often that's the question that matters most.

One Last Thing…

You don't necessarily need to view ten wedding venues.

Sometimes seeing too many makes the decision harder rather than easier.

Do your research, choose a handful that genuinely suit the wedding you're imagining and go to each viewing with an open mind.

Look at the spaces.

Ask lots of questions.

Meet the people.

Imagine your guests there.

And pay attention to that little feeling you get when somewhere feels right.
